Welcome!  Bienvenue!   Bienvenido!   Benvenuto!    Willkommen!    歡迎!   ようこそ!   환영!   καλως ΗΡΘΑΤΕ!   Swaagatam!

Warm regards and greetings. Welcome to our research group Faraday Materials Laboratory (FaMaL) webpage.

We are an interdisciplinary research group (estd. November 2013) based in the Materials Research Centre (MRC) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, INDIA. Our research effort is focused on solid-state (inorganic) chemistry and materials science related to rechargeable batteries for energy storage and electrocatalysis. With major interest in electrochemical materials science, and minor interest in magnetism, our group is named after the great Sir Michael Faraday (1791-1867), who has contributed immensely to the field of electrochemistry and (electro)magnetism. His work ethics, scientific productivity, and gentle personality is truly inspiring. Our scientific work revolves around three words: Electrochemistry, Materials & Chemistry.

'Energy' has emerged as the principal concern in the 21st century, where sustainable 'generation' and efficient 'storage' form two key sectors. Materials science plays a vital role in solving energy problems. We focus on (inorganic) materials chemistry for synthesis, structural and electrochemical investigation of electrochemical energy storage devices such as rechargeable batteries and electrochemical supercapacitors. We endeavour to explore various (post) Li-ion batteries (Li-ion, Na-ion, K-ion and Zn-ion systems) using (non)aqueous electrolytes. and These devices have positive and negative electrodes at their core. The discovery and development of positive (cathode) and negative (anode) insertion materials is important for building better batteries. Our group logo is derived from Tao philosophy, depicting the importance and balance between positive and negative parts of rechargeable batteries and more philosophically about complementary aspects of life.

FaMaL started on 11 November 2013 as an interdisciplinary group having students with educational background in Physics, Chemistry, Metallurgical, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. We are an experimental group focusing on synthesis, structural, magnetic and electrochemical study of energy materials. FaMaL maintains 600 sq ft of office space and 950 sq ft of laboratory space. Our long term goal is to conduct fundamental materials to device research with strong interaction with academic/ industrial partners.

Our base is at Materials Research Centre (estd. 1978), a department focusing on interdisciplinary research and education on 'materials science & technology'. It is a part of the 'Division of Chemical Sciences' at the Indian Institute of Science (estd. 1907).

You are most welcome to browse our website, explore our research effort and to visit our lab, department and Institute. We will be privileged to get your suggestions to improve our research work.
